Monroe Township is located in the central eastern region of Monroe County. It borders the southern city of Monroe, City and County government and is also the most heavily populated township with roughly 15,000 residents and 5,500 households with a median income of $46,694 during the census of 2000.
The population density is greatest near the city of Monroe. The population decreases slightly as one travels toward the Lake Erie shoreline to the east, and is least dense towards the rural and farming landscape in south and west. Residents reflect a wide range of ages with almost equal levels of teen-aged, middle-aged and elderly residents.
Monroe Township is comprised of 17.4 square miles, 1.1 of which is water. Living in Monroe Township will afford you quick access to multiple boat launches and water front living in areas such as Avalon Beach. The River Raisin also lies to the North and is bordered by many parks and recreational opportunities that include fishing, tennis, jogging, sightseeing, picnicking and more.
Ample work can be found in and around the Monroe Township community. With Interstate 75 running through the middle and three nearby on-ramps, residents have easy access to any employment opportunity from Detroit, Michigan to Toledo, Ohio. The Township itself has employment opportunities ranging from farming, education, retail, the Detroit Edison Power Plant and the nearby Ford Automotive Plant.
For children, some of the best private and public schools in the county can be found in Monroe Township such as Custer Elementary, South Monroe Elementary, Monroe High, Waterloo Elementary, and the Monroe County Intermediate School District office with continuing education classes and special education and Monroe County Community College. Private Schools, Trinity Lutheran and St. John’s lie within the city of Monroe itself.
You, your family and friends will appreciate Munson Park with its skate park, soccer fields, baseball diamond, a fantastic playground, jogging and mountain biking trails. A large hill and pond is at its center for sledding and ice skating. The community college is the Monroe County Fair Grounds, one of Michigan largest and most frequented fairs by local residents and travelers hundreds of miles off.
If needed, Custer Airport is also available for private, cargo transportation and aerial instruction.
