Located on the west side of the county, Dundee is home to approximately 3,500 residents. In the last few years, the Village of Dundee has grown by nearly 20 percent. Proof of this is the many factories and stores that have opened in the last four or five years.
Say the word “Dundee” to anyone in or around Monroe County and the first thing that comes to mind to most people is Cabela’s. Dundee is home to the largest Cabela's store in the country. Cabela's is a large sporting retailer which has stores all over the country. Since Cabela's construction many other businesses, restaurants, and hotels have been built in the village. Cabela's and most of the restaurants and businesses are located at the intersection of M-50 and U.S. 23.”
Russell Stover Candies, the Coffee Beanery, Jose’s Mexican Restaurant, River's Edge and dozens of other eateries and restaurants are located near or around Cabela’s alone.
Dundee is also home to the Old Mill Museum. According to the website dundeeoldmill.com, “The Old Mill", located along the banks of the River Raisin in Dundee, is an historic landmark in the Village, not just because it is an impressive structure, but because it was instrumental in the growth and economic development of the community.
Over the years the mill has served as a grist mill, hydro-electric power plant, Ford factory and fabricating factory. Now it is has been restored by community volunteers to create a historical museum. During the ownership of the Ford Motor Company, the factory produced welding tips for Ford's main factories. In the Depression Era, the factory was of major importance to the local economy.
“After Mr. Ford's death, the company gradually withdrew its support of the village industries and the plant was sold in 1954 to Wolverine Manufacturing Company. The company converted the plant into a paper mill to produce gasket material.
“In 1970, Wolverine sold the landmark to the Village of Dundee for $1.00. The mill stood unused for the next decade until 1981 when the Old Mill Restoration Committee, a group of community volunteers, undertook the daunting task of turning the mill structure, whose first floor was covered with tar and chicken wire, into a museum.
“Opened in 1986, the Old Mill Museum contains three stories of permanent and changing exhibits . . . Admission is free, with donations accepted, and tours may be arranged by calling 734-529-8596. The Old Mill, now part of the Ford Heritage Trails, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.”
Over 1,500 children attend Dundee area schools and the main high school for the area is Dundee High School. Monroe County Community College is a popular destination for many graduates. Also, Dundee is only a half hour away from Ann Arbor, home of the University of Michigan, as well as Ypsilanti, home of Eastern Michigan University. Graduates whishing to commute to either of these respected universities can save a money not having to pay for dorms or apartments. Lourdes College, the University of Toledo, Adrian College, and Sienna Heights University, and Wayne State University are all within less than 35 miles of Dundee.
Dozens of antique shops and unique stores make up the historic downtown district. Tiffany’s Pizza, a landmark of Monroe County, is also located in the downtown area. For Monroe County residents, Tiffany’s is to southeastern Michigan what Pizza Hut is to the rest of the world. Visitors should do themselves a favor and sample a steak and cheese grinder or a supreme pizza. Outside of New York, you won’t find a better pizzeria.
Although it’s considered a booming section of Monroe County, Dundee has not at all lost its small town charm. Even while walking through the massive sprawl of Cabela’s, you still get the sense that you’re in a tight-knit, home-based community.
Baptist, Lutheran, and Methodist make-up most of the churches throughout the area.
