Approximately 14,000 people reside in these rural areas of northeastern Monroe County. The median household income for the areas is, according to the 2000 census, $54,000 per year.
Airport High School is the main school for both of these townships.
One of the big employers for the Berlin area is the Meijer Warehouse. The Meijer Warehouse is one of the main distributors of goods to the Meijer retail stores throughout Monroe and Southeastern Michigan, and Toledo, Ohio.
Other major employers for the area are the nearby Fermi Nuclear Power Plant and Detroit Edison, both employing many residents of the townships and other areas.
Both Ash and Berlin Townships have easy access to highways I-275 and I-75 making travel to northern areas, such as Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Dearborn, and to southern points of interest such as Toledo, Bowling Green, and other parts in Ohio.
Being one of the most populated areas in Monroe County, the residents of both townships look forward every year to the massive Monroe County Fair that takes place at the Monroe County Fair Grounds located approximately seven miles from both of the townships.
Many churches are located throughout both townships. The main denominations include Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, and non-denominational churches. Many church events occur throughout the year, as well as town festivals.
Another aspect of Ash and Berlin Townships, as well as many other areas throughout the county, are the corn mazes that children, and (let’s be honest) adults, can enjoy throughout the late summer and early fall months. These corn mazes can be found scattered throughout the areas mostly around Halloween. It’s not uncommon to see pumpkins and other Halloween decorations sold on the same farms that host corn mazes.
Being located not far from Lake Erie, fishing, boating, swimming, canoeing, jet-skiing, and water-skiing are very popular amongst area residents.
Many convenience stores, grocery stores, restaurants (both fast food and family owned), and bars are located throughout the area and are always within a short driving distance.
