Bedford Township of
Monroe County, Michigan ...

Bedford Township is the most populated area in all of Monroe County with an estimated population of 31,000 people. Many people that reside in the township are former residents of Monroe or Toledo, Ohio. Though they now make their home in the southern-most township of Monroe County, many of the residents still work in Monroe or Toledo.

Two villages, Lambertville and Temperance, make-up the majority of Bedford.

Home to Bedford High School and Bedford Junior High, one of the main focuses of the students in this area is sports. Bedford football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and hockey teams are repeatedly some of the top contenders throughout the state of Michigan. Also, the Bedford Community Center has many out-of-school sports teams that children can enter. The Martial Arts are also a growing interest. Martial Arts are offered through the center as well as some individually owned businesses.

And speaking of sports . . . The classic rivalry between Ohio State and the University of Michigan football teams is only heightened. Considering that many southern Michiganders work in Ohio and many Ohioans live in southern Michigan, the Ohio and U of M flags fly during the late football season more than the union and confederate flags during the Civil War. But it’s all in good fun.

The elementary schools in Bedford are also considered some of the finest schools in Michigan. Douglas Road Elementary, Monroe Road Elementary, and Smith Road Elementary along with others are repeat Blue Ribbon winners and boast some of the finest teachers in Michigan and Ohio.

Access to I-75 and US-23 is easy from Bedford. Whether traveling north or south, the two main highways are just minutes apart. Travel to Toledo is even easier. Since Bedford rests on the state line, main roads and back-country roads lead into Ohio. Bedford residents are literally just minutes away from downtown Toledo, the Westfield Shopping Center, and more restaurants, per capita, than any other place in the United States.

Bedford also has many parks with loads of jungle gyms, swing sets, and teeter-totters for the kids to play on. White Park, Samaria Park, Parmalee Park, Carr Park, and Indian Park are the more prominent spots.

A recent addition of a large YMCA center has been quite popular among locals. Also a new library has been added. The Bedford Library hosts book sales, children’s events, special seminars, movie nights, and DVD rentals.

The township website, www.bedfordmi.org, gives residents a comprehensive history lesson of where their township came from, tax information, leaf burning information, as well as other insights to their community and community leaders.

Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, Catholic, and non-denominational churches are found throughout the township.

Hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, ATVing, and camping are popular pastimes amongst many of the locals.
